General Information for Renunciation of Indian Citizenship
- Definition: renunciation of Indian Citizenship is a legal declaration made by a person of Indian origin that they no longer wish to be an Indian citizen.
- Who must do it?: Anyone who has not yet acquired the foreign citizenship and in the process of obtaining the foreign citizenship..
- Legal Basis: India does not allow dual citizenship. As per Section 9 of the Act, acquiring foreign nationality results in automatic loss of Indian citizenship.
- What it involves: Filing a declaration of renunciation and obtaining a Renunciation Certificate from the Indian government.
- Note : According to Section 8(2) of the Citizenship Act 1955, where a person ceases to be a citizen of India, every minor child of that person shall thereupon cease to be a citizen of India. Provided that any such child may, within one year after attaining full age, make a declaration [in the prescribed form and manner] that he wishes to resume Indian citizenship and shall thereupon again become a citizen of India.
Note: Old passport shall be cancelled by the Embassy and cannot be used for travel once application for reissue is accepted.
